Overview:
The Research Director of the Program on Conflict Management
and Negotiation at the University of Toronto and a Principal at Mediated
Solutions Incorporated, Dr. Alexandroff has been involved in domestic and international
dispute resolution theory and practice for some twenty-five years. There are three main parts to his dispute
resolution ("DR") practice – (i) interventions like mediation and
facilitations; (ii) research & training; and (iii) consulting &
systems design.
DR Qualifications:
A specialist in International Relations, having received his
Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University in 1979, Dr. Alexandroff received
his law degree from McGill University Law School in 1984. While there, Dr. Alexandroff continued his
teaching and research in international political economy at the Department of
Political Science; and domestic and international regulation at the Centre for
the Study of Regulated Industries. Dr. Alexandroff
received additional dispute resolution training from the Arbitration and
Mediation Institute of Canada and ICA Canada.
This training included mediation and facilitation. Dr. Alexandroff practised law, including
civil litigation, and government-business relations for a period of eight years
commencing in 1984. Beginning in 1992,
Dr. Alexandroff has been involved in research and teaching at the Centre
for International Studies, University of Toronto. Since 1993, he has run the Program on Conflict Management and
Dispute Resolution for its Chair, Professor Janice Stein. In this role he has conducted and prompted
dispute resolution research and developed a variety of courses in dispute
resolution.
DR Interventions:
Alan S. Alexandroff performs mediation, facilitation, arbitration and other forms of
third-party intervention for individuals and public & private
organizations. Where appropriate, he
designs customized approaches to conflict management and resolution. He has served on the following ADR rosters:

Dr. Alexandroff has assisted in the publication recently of ‘Citizen Engagement in Conflict Resolution: Lessons for Canada in International
Experience,’ Janice Gross Stein, David Cameron and Richard Simeon, C.D. Howe Institute Commentary: The Canadian Union Papers,
No. 94 (June 1997). He authored the Logic of Diplomacy and co-authored with Professor Richard Schultz, Economic Regulation and the
Federal System.
DR Consulting:
Dr. Alexandroff also gives expert design advice about conflict management systems and interventions. Dr. Alexandroff has a particular interest in the management of public disputes and large group interventions. Sample consulting clients include:

- Review and improvement of DR program designs, i.e. confusing roles and responsibilities, inadequate disclosure practices, or implementation difficulties

- Design and comment on investor-state chapter of the North American Free Trade Agreement for Canada
